BERLIOZ: BENVENUTO CELLINI
With
LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
2007 - Berlioz's flamboyant opera Benvenuto Cellini is inspired by the life of the legendary Florentine goldsmith and Renaissance figure. Its first performances in Paris during 1838-39 were disastrous as it proved too great a challenge for the musicians of the day. Yet even by Berlioz's high standards it contains music of exceptional inventiveness and beauty.

OPERA RARA

He composed over 100 stage works, yet only a fraction of Offenbach's output is regularly performed today. This brand new recording of rare arias, duets and ensembles, selected by the late Patric Schmid, assembles some of the finest moments from OffenbachÕs forgotten works, performed by an impressive group of international stars.

Few operas by a major 19th century composer have experienced comparable neglect. The fifth of six operas Meyerbeer wrote for Italian opera houses during his nearly nine years in Italy (1816 to 1824), LÕesule was apparently produced only once following its 1822 premiere at La Scala, Milan (in Florence four years later), and thereafter remained silent until now.

their recording
debut on Virgin Classics with a selection of brilliant and rarely-heard chamber
duets by Handel with ten outstanding soloists. These ten small masterpieces
span Handel's composing career from 1706 to 1745; passionate and theatrical,
they make high demands on the soloists, some of their music later finding its
way into Handel's operas and oratorios, most notably Messiah. Featuring a
stellar cast: Laura Claycomb, Veronique Gens, Natalie Dessay, Patricia
Petibon, Ana-Maria Panzarella, Juanita Lascarro, Sara Mingardo, Brian Asawa,
Mariana Mijanovic, and Paul Agnew.
